This chapter also illustrates the use of the spectral element approach to system identification problems such as force history identification from a response history. But the idea is shown to also tie in closely with the analysis of periodic structures. The idea of a spectral super-element is described for handling joints between connected waveguides. The approach provides all the advantages of the spectral analysis method plus the efficiency and organization of the finite element method. Furthermore, the system of equations to be solved is very small.
